Threads vs X: where to build

Two text platforms, superficially the same shape, that reward completely different behaviour. The differences that decide it, and the one that decides it most.

The short version

  • Threads is easier from zero. Recommendation-led, so a stranger's post reaches strangers.
  • X rewards an audience you already have and tolerates links far better.
  • Replies are the currency on Threads. Reposts and bookmarks are the currency on X.
  • Do not cross-post. Reuse the idea, rewrite the post.
  • Pick one for ninety days. Two at half attention beats neither.

What is the actual difference?

How the feed is assembled. Threads leans heavily on recommendation (most of what a user sees comes from accounts they do not follow), while X leans more on the graph you have already built, with recommendation layered on top. That single difference produces almost every other difference on this page.

The consequence for somebody starting from nothing is direct. On a recommendation-led feed, a good post from an account with eleven followers can reach thousands, because the system is looking for things to show people and does not much care whose they are. On a graph-led feed, a good post from an account with eleven followers reaches eleven people.

Threads asks whether the post is good. X asks who you are, and then whether the post is good.

How do they compare, concretely?

On six things that matter to somebody building a faceless business: cold reach, what earns distribution, how links are treated, the norms around selling, how long a post lives, and who is actually there. They diverge on all six.

Threads X
Reach from zero Easier: recommendation-led Harder: follower-led
What earns distribution Replies, and time in the first hour Reposts, bookmarks, quote posts
Links Tolerated, better in a reply Tolerated, better in a reply
Selling norms Soft. Overt pitching reads badly Direct selling is normal
Post lifespan Hours, sometimes a day Hours, and bookmarks persist
Long-form Not really Yes, and rewarded on the paid tier
Who is there Broader, more casual, Instagram-adjacent Tech, finance, media, politics

The row that surprises people is the last one. The audiences are genuinely different, not merely differently sized: a post about shipping software alone finds its people on X far faster than on Threads, and a post about selling a digital product to a general audience does the opposite.

Which one is easier to start on?

Threads, clearly, and it is not close for an account with no following. The reply loop that grows a Threads account from zero is described in the reply strategy, and it works because replies on Threads are themselves distributed: your reply to a large account can be seen by people who follow neither of you.

There is also the Instagram connection, which matters if you already run one. A Threads account inherits your Instagram handle and can borrow some of its graph, which is a real head start that X cannot offer anyone. For a faceless account already posting reels, that makes Threads the cheapest second platform available. See growing on Instagram without showing your face.

The trade for that easy reach: it is less durable. A Threads post that does well is over in a day, and there is no bookmark culture keeping it alive. X posts get saved, quoted and dug up months later: the ceiling is lower to reach and the floor lasts longer.

Which one sells better?

X, for a product with an audience already paying attention to you. Threads, for finding that audience in the first place. The norms differ enough that the same sales post reads as normal on one and pushy on the other, and the platform that tolerates selling is the one where selling is also more competitive.

  • On X, a direct pitch is unremarkable. Threads of build logs ending in a link are a native format, and the audience expects them.
  • On Threads, selling has to be earned. One post in five, tied to the four before it: the sales-bridge idea in how to make money on Threads.
  • Both punish link-first posts. Write the post so it stands alone, then put the link in the first reply.
  • Both convert through the profile more than through any single post. The bio and the one link are doing more work than most people credit.

Why not just post to both?

Because the same words underperform on both. A post optimised for replies is a position stated with the reasoning withheld; a post optimised for bookmarks is a dense, complete, referenceable thing. Cross-posting produces something in between, which is nobody's best format, and it is visible, because identical text with a different engagement pattern reads as syndicated.

What does transfer is the idea. One thing you learned, written twice: as a claim with a gap for Threads, and as a complete short thread for X. That is fifteen extra minutes rather than a second content operation, and it is the only version of running both that works. The hook shapes transfer too (see Threads hooks that get replies), even though what they open does not.

So which should you pick?

Start on Threads if you have no audience, especially if you already run an Instagram account. Start on X if your buyers are in tech, finance or media, or if you already have followers there. Then run that one properly for ninety days before adding anything, because the daily loop is what produces results and it does not survive being halved.

If… Start on
You have no audience anywhere Threads
You already run an Instagram account Threads
You sell to developers, founders or finance X
You already have followers on X X
You are selling a broad-audience digital product Threads
You want posts that keep being found X

And whichever you choose, the thing that decides the outcome is not the platform. It is whether you post several times a day and reply for the hour afterwards, every day, for three months. Both platforms reward that and neither rewards anything else, which is why the choice matters much less than people arguing about it assume.

Frequently asked questions

Is Threads or X better for growing from zero?

Threads, for most people. Reach for a new account with no followers is substantially easier there, because the feed is recommendation-led rather than follow-led. X rewards an audience you already have; Threads is more willing to show a stranger's post to strangers.

Can you post the same thing to both?

You can, and it underperforms on both. The formats reward different things (X rewards density and links, Threads rewards conversation), so a post written for one reads as slightly wrong on the other. Reuse the idea, rewrite the post.

Which is better for selling digital products?

X has the stronger link culture and a more commercially-minded audience in some niches; Threads has easier reach and a soft-selling norm. For a faceless account starting out, Threads gets you seen and X converts what you already have.

Do links get suppressed on Threads?

Link posts generally perform worse than text-only posts on both platforms, which is a ranking preference rather than a penalty. The usual answer on both is to make the post work on its own and put the link in a reply.

Should I be on both?

Eventually, not at the start. One platform run properly beats two run at half attention, and the daily loop that makes either work (post, reply, repeat) does not divide neatly in two.

Everything above is the map. The Income Loop is the work inside it: modules 0–6 from the problem you solve to the offer that pays for it, plus ten traffic paths: the deeper post banks, the content sales systems and the full software build sequence, in one place.
