How to turn a Google Doc into an ebook

Three ways out of Google Docs, from the one-click export to a book that looks designed, and how to tell which one your ebook needs.

The short version

  • Fix the headings first. Every export reads Docs' heading styles. Bold text that only looks like a heading is lost.
  • PDF from Docs is fine for short guides. It looks like a document, not a book.
  • Docs exports EPUB too. It works, with little control over the result.
  • Markdown is the bridge to a designed book. Docs can export it, and a typesetter takes it from there.

To turn a Google Doc into an ebook, first make sure every chapter title uses Docs' heading styles. Then pick one of three exports: File, Download, PDF for a quick document-style ebook; File, Download, EPUB Publication for e-readers; or File, Download, Markdown, then typeset that file in a book tool for a designed PDF or EPUB. The first two take a minute. The third takes ten and is the one that looks like a book.

Before you export: what has to be clean?

Every export reads the structure of the document, not how it looks. Fix these three things first:

  1. Headings. Chapter titles in Heading 1, sections in Heading 2. Text that is only bold and large is not a heading to an exporter.
  2. Page breaks. Insert, Break, Page break before each chapter. Pressing Enter until the next page is not a page break, and it falls apart in every format.
  3. Images. Set them in line with text. Images that float or wrap move around on export.

Ten minutes here saves an hour of fixing the result.

Way 1: download as PDF

File, Download, PDF Document. Done.

Good for: short guides, checklists and lead magnets where the reader just needs the information.

Watch for: it looks like a printed Google Doc, because it is one. The margins, the fonts and the page numbers are Docs' defaults unless you changed them. There is no automatic table of contents in the PDF unless you inserted one in the doc first (Insert, Table of contents).

Way 2: download as EPUB

File, Download, EPUB Publication. Docs builds a reflowable ebook with your headings as its chapters.

Good for: text-heavy books meant for e-readers, where the reader sets the font size.

Watch for: you have very little say in how it looks. Check it in an e-reader app before you publish. Tables and complex layouts often come out poorly, because reflowable text has no fixed page.

Way 3: export Markdown, then typeset it

File, Download, Markdown. Docs writes your headings, lists, bold, links and tables as plain text with simple marks: # for a chapter, ## for a section, ** for bold.

That file is portable. A typesetting tool can read it and lay it out as a book: real margins, a type scale, a cover, a table of contents, running page numbers, chapters that start on a new page. You keep writing in Docs, and the design lives somewhere it can be reused for the next book.

Good for: paid ebooks, workbooks and anything where the layout is part of what the buyer is paying for.

Watch for: check the Markdown once. Comments and suggestions do not export, and unusual formatting (coloured text, columns) is dropped.

Which way should you choose?

Your ebook Best route
A free checklist or a short lead magnet PDF from Docs
A long, text-only book for e-readers EPUB from Docs, checked in a reader
A paid guide, a workbook, a branded series Markdown, then a typesetter

The test is the price. If someone pays for it, the first page they see should look designed. How to format an ebook covers the margins, fonts and spacing that make the difference.

A pre-publish checklist

  • Every chapter title is a Heading 1.
  • Page breaks, not empty lines, before each chapter.
  • A cover on page one, and nothing else on that page.
  • A table of contents for anything over twenty pages.
  • Opened on a phone and on a laptop before it goes on sale.
  • File name with the book title, not "Untitled document (3)".

If the content is not written yet, how to write an ebook starts from the outline, and how to create a lead magnet covers the free version.

bukpress, if your ebook should look like a book

A note on fit first. If your ebook is ten pages and the Docs PDF already looks fine, export it and move on. bukpress does not write the book, it lays out A4 pages only, and its EPUB export is on the Pro plan.

bukpress takes the Markdown you exported from Docs and turns it into a typeset PDF, or a reflowable EPUB: a live preview paginated by the same rules as the export, three dashes on a line for a page break, your own fonts and cover, and a Brand Kit you save once and reuse. No watermark on any plan, and a free plan to run a real manuscript through first.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Docs export an ebook?

Yes. File, Download offers PDF and EPUB Publication. Both work. The PDF looks like a printed document and the EPUB has little styling control.

Should my ebook be a PDF or an EPUB?

A PDF if people will read it on a screen or print it as you designed it, which suits guides, workbooks and lead magnets. An EPUB if it will be read on e-readers, where the text needs to reflow.

Can I sell an ebook made in Google Docs?

Yes. Nothing stops you, and plenty of paid guides started there. The question is whether the layout matches the price you are asking.

How do I add a cover to a Google Docs ebook?

Insert the cover image on the first page and put a page break after it. For a full-bleed cover, design it separately and merge it with the PDF, or use a tool that takes a cover file.

How do I keep my headings when I export?

Use Docs' heading styles, Heading 1 for chapters and Heading 2 for sections, rather than large bold text. Every export format reads those styles.
